Jesus Embarks on His Ministry in Judea -

Matthew 19:1–2 NASB95
1 When Jesus had finished these words, He departed from Galilee and came into the region of Judea beyond the Jordan; 2 and large crowds followed Him, and He healed them there.

The Religious Leaders Challenges Jesus’ Ministry -

Matthew 19:3 NASB95
3 Some Pharisees came to Jesus, testing Him and asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?”
Matthew 5:31 NASB95
31 “It was said, ‘Whoever sends his wife away, let him give her a certificate of divorce’;
Mt 19:3 There were two interpretations of the Mosaic divorce law in Jesus’ time. Two of the most famous Jewish rabbis lived during the inter-biblical period (between the OT and NT). They interpreted Deuteronomy 24:1–4 differently. Rabbi Hillel focused on the phrase, “… but she becomes displeasing to him,” meaning a man could seek a divorce for any and every cause. It was not “no fault” divorce, but “any fault” divorce. Rabbi Shammai focused on the phrase “he finds something improper about her.” He interpreted this to mean a man could divorce his wife only if she had committed adultery. Jesus sided with Shammai.

Jesus’ Interaction with the Religious Leaders -

Matthew 19:4–6 (NASB95)
4 And He answered and said, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female,
5 and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?
6 “So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.”
Genesis 1:27 NASB95
27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Genesis 5:2 NASB95
2 He created them male and female, and He blessed them and named them Man in the day when they were created.
Genesis 2:24 NASB95
24 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.
Ephesians 5:31 NASB95
31 For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.
1 Corinthians 6:16 NASB95
16 Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, “The two shall become one flesh.”
Matthew 19:7 NASB95
7 They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give her a certificate of divorce and send her away?”
Deuteronomy 24:1–4 (NASB95)
1 “When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out from his house,
2 and she leaves his house and goes and becomes another man’s wife, 3 and if the latter husband turns against her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies who took her to be his wife,
4 then her former husband who sent her away is not allowed to take her again to be his wife, since she has been defiled; for that is an abomination before the Lord, and you shall not bring sin on the land which the Lord your God gives you as an inheritance.
Matthew 5:31 NASB95
31 “It was said, ‘Whoever sends his wife away, let him give her a certificate of divorce’;
Matthew 19:8–12 (NASB95)
8 He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way. 9 “And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”
10 The disciples said to Him, “If the relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to marry.” 11 But He said to them, “Not all men can accept this statement, but only those to whom it has been given.
12 “For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother’s womb; and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men; and there are also eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to accept this, let him accept it.
Parallel gospel account - Mark 10:1-12 -
SO WHAT??
Never loose sight of God’s intended purpose of marriage!
Right now you as teens must focus on living for Christ in every aspect of your life!
Hebrews 12:1–3 (NASB95)
1 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Colossians 3:2–3 NASB95
2 Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. 3 For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
